Race Day Soundtrack

This years race "sountrack" was comprised of various artists from around the world.  The core source of this musical gumbo is the Putamayo record label which has become extremely popular and visible in the chain CD stores over the past few years.  This lable has numerous collections from various countries and musical styles.  Selected CD's played during race day from the Putamayo label were:

Islands: A collection from various island countries from Jamaica to Cape Verde.

Afro-Latino: A collection of African and Latin influenced music.

New World Party: Dance music from around the world.

Reggae Around the World: Reggae influenced music from not just Jamaica.


There were five other collections played during the race:

Club Ska 99:  The Shack, Vol. II  on BIB records
   A collection of upbeat ska music mostly from Jamaica and surrounding islands, the
   U.S. and England.

Festival Tropical:  ARC Music Productions
   A collection of samba, calypso, salsa and merengue artists from around the world.

This is Soca:  Music Club Records
   A collection of mostly Brazillian artists playing music heard during Brazil's
   carnival season.

From East Memphis to Kingson:  Tuff Gong Records
   A collection of soul songs remade to a reggae beat.

Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Music: Dancing Cat Records


Individual Artists played during the race include:

Floyd Lloyd:  Tear it Up, the Ska Album
   Mark Salvetti's personal favorite "Mr. Yoyo"
   A lively ska music album recorded recently and including the potato five and the
   New Orleans Jazz Stars

Ziggy Marley:  Spirit of Music, Electra Records

Taj Mahal:  Phantom Blues

Keb Mo:  Slow Down, Okeh Music (Taj's musical Son)

Keith Frank:  What's his name?  Maison De Soul Records
   One of the best Louisiana Zydeco players currently performing

Marvin Gaye's greatest hits, Motown
